Current situation:

After the election won by CPN.M (maoïsts), there was no serious incident to notice till now. The country is very quiet.

4 hours daily power cut in Nepal this month. Problems on water distribution. Problems on petrol distribution (1h30 to 2h waiting).

After TRC (always adjourned), TIMS is now compulsory (see below).

The daily Tibetan demonstrations harshly curbed take place only on special spots as the Consulate of China at Hattisar ; the China Embassy at Baluwatar and UNO Offices at Pulchowk. These demonstrations don't concern the whole of country.

The Olympic Chinese expedition having buzzed off from Chomolungma, the others can go up in the little gap before the coming monsoon.

Current forecast:

In May, air becomes hotter, sultry and the instability, already there in April, increase. The cumulus grow up from the morning everywhere hiding the mountains. The strong storms break regularly in the evening, always with fierce winds. In trek, it will be better to start earlier to take advantage of the good morning conditions if you want to see the mountains and to avoid the evening shower. The leeches start to come in herbal or forest areas.

The storm the started yesterday evening continued in the night. Kathmandu wakes up this morning under a clear sky. The weather will become sultry and the sky will remain pearly. Stroms could break during the day. The temperatures are hot. On hill areas, it will be the same kind of weather. In mountain, the cumulus already present will grow up from morning blocking gradually the valleys under a cloud cover. Localized storms could break during the day. These squalls will turn into flurries of snow above 4000 m. The temperatures are pleasant for trekking.

The temperatures are around 18C at 7AM, 30C for the hotter (at 1300m).

T.I.M.S in place of adjourned TRC

After the TRC, the TIMS (Trekker's Information Management System) works from the 01st January 2008. Each trekker with guide or porter must have this certificate with him. It is said : "The TIMS mechanism would help secure business for government authorized trekking agents as it discourages independent trekking leaders that were robbing the trekking agents off their business". From March, 01st 2008, this implementation concerns all the trekkers (self-sufficient or with nepali staff). Please, to ask it in trekking agencies or at Immigration Office.

Information about Tibet

After the last bloody demonstrations in Lhasa, in Amdo and Kham, the Tibet is closed. Chomolungma (Everest) ascents are forbidden, Tibet and Nepal sides, for olympic reasons. The reopening of this country is rejected till end of August.

Information about Ladakh - Zanskar

The road between Shrinagar and Leh by Zoji La has been closed from November and will be opened in April. The road between Manali and Leh by Rothang La has been closed in October and will be opened in May.
